JD Martinez homered twice, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched 7 brilliant innings, and the Boston Red Sox rolled to an 11-0 shutout of the San Diego Padres. In a rare visit to San Diego, the bats jumped on ace Chris Paddack early, setting the tone all night. Rodriguez also reached base on an error and scored to add to his great night pitching.

Martinez gave the Red Sox an early 3-0 lead when he slapped a Paddack pitch into the left field seats. In the second inning, Mookie Betts hit a sac fly, Rafael Devers doubled in a run, and Xander Bogaerts doubled in Devers to make it 6-0 and the end of the night for Paddack. In the 4th, Martinez got RBI number 4 with a sac fly to left field. In the 6th, Bogaerts hit an RBI single, and Martinez hit his second 3 run homer of the game, this one also ending in the left field seats to make it 11-0.

Rodriguez went 7 innings for the Red Sox, allowing 5 hits and one walk to go with no runs. He struck out 6 hitters. Josh Smith pitched the 8th and 9th innings to secure the win. Martinez, Betts, and Devers each had 3 hits to key the Red Sox offense. They now have beaten the Padres in 6 of their last 7 meetings and lead the overall series 13-6. The Sox defense was also in tune, with Brock Holt and Betts making fine stops, and the infield turning 4 double plays, 3 in the first 4 innings.

Only one Padres baserunner made it as far as second base as the offense couldn't get anything going against Rodriguez. Paddack lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and one walk, and he didn't strike a single batter out. The pitcher who pitched the most innings for the Padres was Robbie Erlin, who lasted 3 innings in relief of Paddack. Paddack said after that ''It's a hard one to swallow. Just got beat tonight. That's all there is to it."

The Padres will look to rebound Saturday night by sending righty Dinelson Lamet to the mound. He is 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA this season in 8 starts. The Red Sox look to stay on track with Nathan Eovaldi taking the mound. Eovaldi struggled in his last start, lasting 2 innings against the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday. He is 1-0 with a 6.69 ERA in a rocky season for him so far. If anyone is interested in the players weekend nicknames for each team, here they are: Red Sox and Padres
