Red Sox snap losing streak on Porcello's gem

This is what the Red Sox needed: A quality start from Rick Porcello. Porcello threw 6 innings of one run ball, and the bats came alive as the Boston Red Sox held off a late comeback attempt to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5. Porcello finished his evening with the score 4-1, but the bullpen gave up 4 runs as Kansas City attempted to come back.

The scoring didn't start until the 3rd inning, when Mookie Betts scored on what should have been an easy double play, but the ball was mishandled, so everyone was safe. A few batters later, Sam Travis belted a 429 foot two run home run off the light stand in left-center field. In the 5th, Rafael Devers hit an opposite field solo shot to extend the lead to 4-0. In the 6th, Cheslor Cuthbert got the Royals on the scoreboard with a solo shot. In the 7th, Kansas City homered again to trim the lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the 7th, Sandy Leon scored on a wild pitch, and Andrew Benintendi got down on one leg to rip a two run double into right field to make it 7-2. In the 8th, Matt Barnes almost gave up the lead by allowing a 3 run homer to Bubba Starling.

Porcello went 6 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits and two walks. He also struck out 5. The Red Sox needed a quality start, as their rotation has been struggling lately. Porcello definitely gave them one. Nathan Eovaldi threw the 7th, Barnes worked the 8th, and Brandon Workman finished off the Royals in the 9th for his 6th save of the year. Mike Montgomery took the loss for the Royals, going 5 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and one walk.

The Royals will send Jakob Junis to the hill for game two of the series on Tuesday. The Red Sox will send Andrew Cashner to the mound, looking for his second win with the Red Sox. First pitch is at 7:10 at Fenway Park.
