Jeff McNeil welcomed Robert Dugger to the majors with a homer on his first pitch, Jacob Degrom helped himself with a two run single, and the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 6-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader to move to .500 on the season. The Mets trailed the wild card by 8 games on July 25 but have surged back and entered the doubleheader just 3 back. Manager Mickey Callaway said that ''We know we're far from our goal, we have to continue to climb and climb and climb, and scratch and claw.''

McNeil got the Mets on the board with a leadoff, first pitch homer off Dugger to make it 1-0 Mets. In the second, Miami tied the game on a double by Starlin Castro. In the 3rd, Amed Rosario gave the Mets the lead back with a solo shot to right field. In the 4th, Degrom gave himself some breathing room by whacking a two run single to center field. In the 5th, Pete Alonso hit an RBI single, and JD Davis hit a sac fly to make it 6-1. In the 6th, Isan Diaz homered in his major league debut, taking Degrom deep to left field and making it 6-2, much to the enjoyment of his parents, who were being interviewed at the time.

Degrom went 7 innings, allowing two runs on 5 hits and one walk. He also struck out 8. Justin Wilson worked the 8th, and Edwin Diaz finished the Marlins in the 9th. Both had two strikeouts apiece. Dugger lasted just 5 innings, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 3 hitters. Tayron Guerrero and Wei-Yin Chen relived Dugger.

Pete Alonso's home run in the 7th capped off an epic inning. The Mets homered three times that inning en route to a comeback 4-2 against the Marlins in the second game of the doubleheader to move above .500 this season. Alonso said that ''Getting to this point has been really tough, but now anything can happen." The Mets haven't been above .500 since they were 16-15 after May 2. They are 17-6 since the all star break.

The Mets jumped on the board quick, when Michael Conforto shot a single into left field, scoring two runs and making it 2-0 early. In the 4th inning, Harold Ramirez singled in Brian Anderson to get Miami on the board. In the 5th, Bryan Holladay homered to tie the game, and Curtis Granderson gave the Marlins the lead on a two run double to left field, making it 4-2. In the 7th inning, JD Davis launched a solo home run to right field on a full count. Then, Conforto tied the game with another full count solo bomb to right field. Then, Alonso untied it with a long homer to left.

Jeurys Familia got the win for the Mets, working the 7th inning in which he allowed one baserunner, a walk. Seth Lugo got a 6 out save for the Mets, working the 8th and 9th innings. Jeff Brigham took the loss for Miami, going 1 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and one strikeout. Conforto described the 7th inning after, saying that ''It was about as electric as I've ever seen it here."
