No matter what happens, the St.Louis Cardinals will be playing postseason baseball in 2019. Paul Goldschmidt hit the go ahead double in the 9th inning, and the Cardinals rallied past the Chicago Cubs again with a 3-2 win. This win also ensures that the Cubs will not win the NL central this season. This is the first time the Cardinals will play in October since 2015. Manager Mike Shildt said that ''Just relentless on our guys' part, that's the way we play baseball. That's the way we compete.''

The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nicholas Castellanos scored on a passed ball. In the 3rd, Paul Dejong tied the game at 1 with a solo blast to to left field. In the 6th, Castellanos cranked a solo homer to center field to make it a 2-1 Cubs lead. In the 9th, Dexter Fowler hit a sac fly to tie the game, and Goldschmidt cranked a double down the left field line to give St.Louis the lead.

Yu Darvish pitched an excellent game for the Cubs, lasting 8 1/3 innings and giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 12 Cardinals. He still got hung with the loss to fall to 6-8. Pedro Strop was the other Cub to pitch. The Cubs have now lost 5 straight games by one run, and 6 straight losses overall. Manager Joe Maddon said that ''If you just play back the tape it's almost unbelievable that it turned out this way." The Cubs also fell to 4 games back of the wild card with the loss.

Miles Mikolas went 7 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, giving up two runs on 8 hits and one walk. He struck out 4 hitters. He wound up with a no decision. Tyler Webb got the win for the Cardinals, finishing the 8th after Mikolas left. He is now 2-1 on the season. Andrew Miller pitched the 9th and secured his 6th save of the year. When Tommy Edman singled and stole second, that set the stage for Goldschmidt to deliver. He said that ''I swung and missed a couple times at some pitches in the middle, luckily, I was able to hit that last one down the line.''

The Cardinals hit the road to Arizona, where Adam Wainwright will start for the Cards against Arizona's Alex Young. The Cubs head to Pittsburgh, where Kyle Hendricks will start Tuesday's opening game against Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller.
