Remember when we thought the Arizona Diamondbacks were dead in the water after trading away Zack Greinke? That did not age well. Ketel Marte hit a 3 run homer, Archie Bradley escaped a bases loaded jam, and the D-Backs continued their torrid stretch with a 7-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Yes, with this torrid stretch, the D-Backs are now just 2 1/2 games back of the second wild card spot in the NL, leapfrogging several teams in the process. The D-backs have won 10 of 11 and 13 of 17 in the process.

In the first inning, the Reds jumped ahead on an Aristedes Aquino RBI double to left field. In the 3rd inning, Nick Ahmed homered to center, and Eugenio Suarez hit an RBI single to make it 2-1 Reds. In the 5th, Marte cranked his 3 run homer, and Josh Rojas hit a two run single to make it 6-2. Suarez then put the Reds back in it with a 3 run homer. In the 8th, Wilmer Flores hit an RBI single for the insurance run to make it 7-5.

D-Backs starter Robbie Ray went 4 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. He was taken out in the 5th inning after discovering a hotspot on his finger, but he was taken out fast enough that a blister couldn't form. Kevin Ginkel got the win for Arizona, working the 7th and 8th innings, and allowing 3 walks and no runs. Bradley got the save in the 9th for Arizona. Ray did get to a 200 strikeout season before he got taken out.

Reds starter Tyler Mahle took the loss, working 4 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits and two walks. Manager David Bell said that ''There were lots of things that didn't go in our favor, but if you're a baseball fan, that was fun to watch." Mahle made a mistake that led to the Marte homer. He wanted to throw one pitch to Marte, but his catcher Curt Casali called for a fastball, and Mahle left it over the plate. Mahle said that ''Next time, go with my gut feeling."

The series continues on Saturday, where Alex Young will get the start for Arizona. The Reds look to rebound by sending Luis Castillo to the mound.
