It took two games rolled into one, but it finally ended. With the stadium very empty, Ildemaro Vargas hit a walkoff single to left field to cap a wild 19 inning game as the Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the St.Louis Cardinals. The game lasted almost 7 hours, ending at 1:34 AM Arizona time. Manager Torey Lovullo said that ''We just didn't shut down, we had plenty of opportunities to feel sorry for ourselves and we didn't. We scratched together some runs at the right time.''

The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Dexter Fowler hit a solo homer to right field. It stayed 1-0 Cardinals all the way to the 9th inning, when Vargas hit the game tying homer to left field to send the game to extra innings. In the 13th inning, Paul Goldschmidt shot a solo homer to center field to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1. In the bottom of the 13th, the D-Backs stayed alive when Caleb Joseph hit an RBI single to right to tie it at 2. In the 19th, with the bases loaded, Vargas lined the ball into left to seal the win.

Arizona starter Mike Leake pitched 6 innings, allowing one run on 5 hits and two walks. He struck out 3 in the no decision. Many, many pitchers later, Kevin Ginkel got the win, working the top of the 19th. He allowed one hit to improve to 3-0. Carson Kelly and Nick Ahmed started the 19th inning rally with back to back singles. With two outs, Christian Walker drew a walk to set the stage for Vargas. Robbie Ray, a starting pitcher, had to pinch hit in this game. Vargas said that ''I was so excited, just pumped up."

Today's game started at 3:40 EST, where Michael Wacha started for the Cardinals against Arizona's Merrill Kelly.
