Marcus Stroman pitched into the 7th inning, Todd Frazier kept up the homer barrage, and the New York Mets came down on the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-1 in the series finale today. The Mets secured a sweep with the win, and now after this recent surge, sit just two games out of a wild card spot, leapfrogging Arizona in the process.

The Mets went to work in the second inning, when Frazier homered again to make it 1-0 early. In the 3rd, JD Davis hit an RBI single, and Juan Lagares launched a grand slam to left field to make it 6-0. In the 5th, Lagares homered again, Robinson Cano homered, as did Tomas Nido to make the score 10-0. In the 7th, Michael Conforto homered to make it 11-1. The D-Backs got their one run on an Ildemaro Vargas RBI double in the top of the 7th.

With the series sweep, the D-Backs were leapfrogged by the Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild card race, and sit 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot. Alex Young took the loss for Arizona, lasting just 2 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs on 5 hits and two walks. He struck out 3 hitters. Arizona used 7 pitchers in relief of Young.

Stroman pitched 6 1/3 solid innings for the Mets, giving up one run on 4 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 6 Arizona hitters. Daniel Zamora and Chris Mazza finished the game in relief of Stroman. Lagares, Conforto, and Davis each had two hits for the Mets, as they won as a team, not just from one player's production. Pete Alonso went 0-5 in the game.

As it stands, the Brewers already won today while the Cubs haven't played yet, so Milwaukee currently holds the second NL wild card spot outright. If the Cubs win, they will tie with Milwaukee for the spot. The first spot is still controlled by Washington. The Mets sit 2 games out of a spot, and the Philadelphia Phillies sit 2 1/2 games out. Those teams are ahead of Arizona in the standings, though there is plenty of time for Arizona to make up the deficit. Tomorrow, the D-Backs are back home, where they host the Cincinnati Reds, who they just played last weekend. The Mets remain at home, but face a large challenge in the Los Angeles Dodgers.
