Series to watch this week

Entering September, there are plenty of games that mean a lot of quite a few teams. We'll look at series with wild card implications to follow this week.

New York Mets @ Washington Nationals, Sep 2-4

The Mets won the first game of the series by a 7-3 score, and this series will be crucial for them as the try to shorten the deficit in a crowded NL wild card race. The Nats need this series to perhaps shorten the gap on the division leading Atlanta Braves, and pad their lead in the first NL wild card spot.

Minnesota Twins @ Boston Red Sox, Sep 3-5

The Red Sox look to shorten the gap in the AL wild card race, which they desperately need to do, and the Twins are looking to keep a reasonable distance ahead of Cleveland in the AL central. This should be a good series, as Boston took 2 of 3 from the Twins in May.

Chicago White Sox @ Cleveland Indians, Sep 2-5

The Indians, suddenly looking very mortal, need this series to maintain their claim to a wild card spot. Oakland and Boston have snuck up, so Cleveland needs this series to keep pace. The White Sox have nothing to play for, but they can play spoiler with a few wins.

Los Angeles Angels @ Oakland Athletics, Sep 3-5

The Athletics sit just one game out of a wild card spot, so this series is very important for the team. The Angels don't have anything to play for in this lost season, so they have an opportunity to play spoiler for Oakland's playoff hopes.

San Francisco Giants @ St.Louis Cardinals, Sep 2-5

The Cardinals currently lead the NL central, but one bad streak and they could be on the outside looking in, so any form of winning is important to St.Louis right now. The Giants have seemed to fall out of the race, so any win the Giants could muster against St.Louis would do other teams in the NL a favor.

San Diego Padres @ Arizona Diamondbacks, Sep 2-4

Imagine the Arizona Diamondbacks right back in the playoff race? Well, they are. They sit 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, so this series against San Diego is very important. The Padres are just looking for team pride here, and a few wins could help teams behind Arizona, such as the Mets and the Brewers.

NOTE: I purposely left out a few two game series that are concluding tonight, such as Mariners @ Cubs and Astros @ Brewers.
