Yelich out for season

If the Milwaukee Brewers want to make the playoffs, they will have to do so without their MVP. Christian Yelich will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his right knee cap during last night's game against the Miami Marlins. Yelich traveled back to Milwaukee today for further evaluation. General Manager David Stearns said that "We don't have a definitive time frame for his return, other than we know that he'll be out for the remainder of the season right now, we also don't know whether surgery is required."

Yelich sustained the injury when he fouled a pitch off his knee in his at bat in the first inning. He spent several minutes in pain on the ground, but eventually was able to walk off on his own power. Manager Craig Counsell said that Yelich was crushed after he heard the diagnosis. Counsell said that "We feel awful for Christian," Counsell said. "He's a special player and it's a joy to watch him play every day. ... Not being able to see that every day is definitely no good."

Yelich was having an MVP caliber season for the Brewers, hitting .329 with 44 homers and 97 RBI. He also has 29 doubles and 30 stolen bases. He leads the NL in OPS, OBP, and slugging percentage. The Brewers currently sit 1 1/2 games out of the wild card.
