St Louis leads 1-0

Marcell Ozuna hit the go ahead double as the St.Louis Cardinals overcame a 3-1 deficit to win game one of the NLDS over the Atlanta Braves 7-6. The Cardinals held off two homers by the Braves in the bottom of the 9th to earn the win. Matt Carpenter said that ''These are fun, exciting games, every out, every pitch is important. There's a lot of adrenaline involved, but that's what you play for, that's why you're here." In the Cardinals first postseason experience since 2015, this team looks as gritty as other playoff teams have been.

The Braves opened the scoring in the first inning when Kolten Wong booted a ground ball, scoring Ozzie Albies. In the 5th, the Cardinals tied it up on a Dexter Fowler RBI groundout. In the 6th, two runs scored on Dansby Swanson's sharp line drive to 3rd base, which became a double error on the Cardinals. In the 8th, the Cardinals tied it on a Paul Goldschmidt solo homer and a Carpenter RBI single. In the 9th, Ozuna and Kolten Wong each hit two run doubles to make it 7-3. In the bottom of the 9th, the Braves tried to come back, with Ronald Acuna blasting a two run homer and Freddie Freeman launching a solo homer to make it 7-6, but Carlos Martinez struck out Nick Markakis to end the game.

Atlanta starter Dallas Keuchel went 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on 5 hits and 3 walks for a no decision. Mark Melancon took the loss for the Braves, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and two walks. Freeman said after the game that ''We've played all season expecting to win those type games, you give up that kind of lead, it's tough to swallow." Acuna also got some heat from his teammates and coaches for lack of hustle, after he thought he hit a homer but it fell in play, and as a result of no hustle, Acuna only got a single on the play.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas went 5 innings, giving up one run on 3 hits and two walks to earn the no decision. Carlos Martinez got the win, giving up 3 runs on two hits and one walk. The Cardinals were able to overcome surprisingly bad defense, with 3 errors, to win the game.

Game two has just started, with St.Louis sending staff ace Jack Flaherty to the mound against Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz. The Cardinals try to put a stranglehold on the Braves, while Atlanta looks to even the series before they travel to St.Louis.
