   Washington leads series 1-0

Anibal Sanchez pitched a gem, Yan Gomes and Howie Kendrick led the offense, and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 in game one of the NLCS. Sanchez made Washington's big 3 pitchers into a big 4. Ryan Zimmerman said that "tonight was obviously vintage Anibal."

The Nats took a quick lead in the second inning, when Gomes doubled to center field, scoring Kendrick and giving the Nats a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the 7th, when Kendrick singled in Adam Eaton to make it 2-0.

Sanchez took a no hit bid into the 8th inning, going 7 2/3 innings and giving up one hit and no runs. He struck out 5 to earn his first win this postseason. Sean Doolittle finished the game for his first save this October. Zimmerman helped keep Sanchez's no hit bid intact with a great diving play at first base to catch a line drive from Tommy Edman to get the out. Sanchez thought he would get the no no after that play, saying that "OK, I've got it." Unfortunately, that did not happen.

Miles Mikolas took the loss for St.Louis, giving up one run on 7 hits and two walks. Carlos Martinez broke up the no hitter with a base hit to center field in the 8th. Manager Mike Shildt said that "People were talking about the big three, but we got a guy tonight who we got to contend with and not overlook him." Edman said that "He was good, he was just hitting his spots and keeping us off balance all night, and we just didn't execute our plan very well."

Game two is Saturday afternoon in St.Louis, with the Cards sending playoff veteran Adam Wainwright to the mound. Washington sends NLDS hero Max Scherzer to the mound.
