For at least one more season, Adam Wainwright will be a member of the St.Louis Cardinals. The team announced on Tuesday that they have resigned Wainwright to a one year deal. Wainwright will be payed $5 million, and can earn another $5 million in incentives, according to Ken Rosenthal. Wainwright was originally drafted in 2000 by the Atlanta Braves, but he has played every major league game in a Cardinals uniform.

Wainwright, who is 38, stopped short of saying he'd retire at the end of the season, but admitted it could be his last contract. He said that "At the moment we're going year to year, and with the likelihood of this probably being it. But who knows how those things work? My thought right now is only to help this team win a World Series. That's it." Wainwright also joked around, saying that "I originally proposed a six-year deal, guaranteed, but the Cardinals didn't go for it." Wainwright went 14-10 this season, posting a 4.19 ERA. His 162 wins are 4th in franchise history, while his 1,776 strikeouts are second in franchise history.

Cardinals president John Mozeliak said that "We are excited to have Adam returning for 2020 and look forward to watching him continue to add to his tremendous career legacy with the Cardinals." Wainwright is one of the longest tenured Cardinals pitchers, behind only Jesse Haines and Bob Gibson for longevity with the team. Wainwright has missed substantial parts of 3 seasons due to injury, but every time, it seems Wainwright comes back better than ever. His 14 wins were tied for 6th in the NL, and his highest win total since he won 20 games in 2014.
