The New York Yankees have released OF Jacoby Ellsbury, according to the team. The Yankees will still owe Ellsbury $26 million in a deal he signed in the winter of 2013, just after winning a world series with the Boston Red Sox. He failed to live up to his hype in New York, hitting .264 with 39 homers and 102 stolen bases with the Yanks. His last appearance was in the 2017 ALCS, in which he appeared as a pinch runner. He didn't play all of 2018 and 2019 due to various injuries.

The Yankees also announced that they have DFA'd 1B Greg Bird as well. The oft-injured Bird had a .725 OPS with 32 homers in 186 games with the Yankees. He only played 10 games in 2019 due to a plantar fascia tear. Nestor Cortes Jr was also DFA'd to make room for prospects Estevan Florial, Luis Gil, Deivi Garcia, Brooks Kriske, Luis Medina, Nick Nelson, and Miguel Yajure to the 40 man roster to protect them from being taken in the rule 5 draft.

The Tampa Bay Rays have DFA'd utility player Matt Duffy, the organization announced. Duffy had one homer in 46 games with the Rays, posting a .670 OPS. The Rays also traded RHP Jose De Leon to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash and a player to be named later. These moves were made to add prospects to the 40 man roster to protect them from the rule 5 draft.

Miami Marlins LHP Wei-Yin Chen has been DFA'd, the team announced Wednesday night. Chen was one of the most expensive free agent signings in Marlins history, signing a 5 year, $80 million deal in 2016 after a solid season in Baltimore. The Marlins owe Chen $22 million in the 2020 season. Chen was a bust in Miami, posting a 5.10 ERA in his tenure with the team, including a 6.59 ERA in 2019. He was also injured quite a bit during his tenure with the Marlins. Chen's DFA allowed the Marlins to add several prospects to their 40 man roster, including top prospects Sixto Sanchez and Jazz Chisholm.
