The Chicago White Sox have signed C Yasmani Grandal to a 4 year, $73 million contract, the team announced on Thursday. Grandal will be payed $18.25 million per season. He has a full no trade clause for 2020, and a limited no trade clause for the rest of the contract. Grandal declined a mutual option with the Milwaukee Brewers, making him a free agent again. He hit .246 with 28 homers in 153 games in 2019 with the Brewers.

White Sox president Ken Williams said that "This was all planned, going back five years ago when we started this and started thinking about this. We get ourselves in position with our young core and we could augment it with guys like this." Grandal said that "Last year the market was kind of completely nonexistent, this year it seemed like several teams were working hard within their limits. The team that stood out to me was the White Sox. They showed that they really wanted me."

Grandal will join C James McCann in the Chicago depth chart. McCann had an excellent 2019, hitting .273 in 118 games, and he was named an all star. Grandal played both catcher and first base in Milwaukee, and he should continue that in Chicago, with 1B Jose Abreu splitting time between first and DH. To make room for Grandal, OF Daniel Palka was DFA'd.
