The New York Yankees have signed RHP Gerrit Cole to a 9 year, $324 million contract, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Cole's deal is a new record, shattering Stephen Strasburg's $245 million contract. Cole will be paid $36 million a season. There is an opt out clause at the end of the 5th season. There is also a no trade clause included in his deal. With the contract, Cole will make $1.09 million for each start he makes, $169,000 per inning pitched, $110,000 per strikeout, and $9,200 for every pitch he throws, based on his 2019 total stats.

Before the deal was announced, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels were viewed as the frontrunners in the race for Cole. Cole was offered a contract by the Angels for just under $300 million. Cole will join a rotation that includes Luis Severino, James Paxton, and Masahiro Tanaka. The Yankees didn't make a world series appearance in the 2010's, prompting them to sign Cole. Cole was a first round pick of the Yankees in 2008, but he didn't sign. He was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011.
