Hamels signs with Braves

The Atlanta Braves' shopping spree this winter continues. The Braves have signed LHP Cole Hamels to a one year, $18 million deal, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. Hamels reportedly doesn't have a no trade clause. Hamels has never received a qualifying offer, so if he has a good 2020, Atlanta could extend him one, as the qualifying value this offseason was $17.9 million, just a shade under what he will earn this season.

Hamels spent 2019 with the Chicago Cubs, in which he posted a 3.81 ERA with 143 strikeouts in 27 starts. Hamels said of the signing that "I wanted to play for a contender." Atlanta lost lefties Julio Teheran and Dallas Keuchel to free agency, so Hamels' addition makes sense. The Braves have been quite busy this winter, signing Hamels, Darren O'Day, Travis D'Arnaud, Will Smith, Chris Martin, Tyler Flowers, and Nick Markakis, giving out $98.75 million in new contracts.
