White Sox nab Encarnacion

The Chicago White Sox have signed 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion to a one year, $12 million deal, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. There is a team option for the 2021 season worth $12 million. The White Sox added Encarnacion for one reason: hit homers. The White Sox hit 182 homers last year, good for 28th in baseball. Encarnacion has hit 30 or more homers in the last 8 seasons, which will give their lineup a jolt.

Encarnacion played for the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees last season, hitting .244 with 34 homers in 109 games played. The Yankees acquired him in June to bolster their massively depleted lineup, and it paid off. Regardless, his $5 million option was declined by the Yankees after the world series ended. He, like most of the Yankees, were injured though. He suffered a strained left oblique that limited him down the stretch. He hit .308 in the ALDS, but struggled badly in the ALCS, where they ultimately lost in 6 games.

The White Sox have had quite a busy offseason. They have a promising young corps, and they loaded up around them. They added C Yasmani Grandal, OF Nomar Mazara, and brought back Jose Abreu along with the add of Encarnacion on the hitting side of things. On the pitching staff, they added lefties Gio Gonzalez and Dallas Keuchel to solidify the rotation alongside Lucas Giolito, while Carlos Rodon and Michael Kopech work their way back from Tommy John surgery.
