The Texas Rangers have signed C Robinson Chirinos to a one year, $6.75 million deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Chirinos will make $5.75 million in the 2020 season, and there is a team option for the 2021 season. The option is worth $6.5 million and has a $1 million buyout, guaranteeing Chirinos $6.75 million. Chirinos isn't known for his hitting ability, but does have pop. He is more of a defensive catcher, who can frame pitches and save runs at a good clip.

Chirinos spent one year with the Houston Astros in 2019, playing 114 games for Houston. Chirinos hit .238 with 17 homers and 58 RBI with the Astros. He also added one stolen base on the season, and had a .443 slugging percentage. Chirinos is a career .234 hitter with 85 homers and 262 RBI in his career, along with a career .439 slugging percentage and 4 stolen bases. In addition, 40 of Chirinos' 87 hits this season were for extra bases.

Chirinos was with the Rangers from 2013 to 2018, and was their opening day catcher for 3 of those years. He had 67 of his 85 homers in a Ranger uniform. The Rangers declined his option for 2019, prompting him to sign with Houston. The Rangers have Jeff Mathis and Jose Trevino currently rostered as catchers, and have invited catchers Tim Fedorowicz, Nick Ciuffo, and Blake Swihart to spring training. Additionally, top prospect Sam Huff is a catcher, so Chirinos will have his work cut out for him.
