Dodgers trade with Angels called off

The trade between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels involving Dodgers OF Joc Pederson fell through on Sunday, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The trade, which was agreed to on Tuesday, would've sent Pederson, RHP Ross Stripling, and OF Andy Pages to Anaheim, with IF Luis Rengifo headed to the Dodgers. According to Rosenthal, the transaction didn't occur because the trade was on hold pending the Mookie Betts deal with the Dodgers, and Angels owner Arte Moreno became impatient and pulled out of the deal.

Angels GM Billy Eppler said of the decision that "There are a lot of components in deals that need to be satisfied before you get to a point where you are calling players and informing them, we weren't able to get to that point, and in fairness to our players and players with other organizations, we won't comment further than that." The trade that was holding this deal up, the Betts trade, never materialized due to medical issues with Minnesota Twins RHP Brusdar Graterol, but the Dodgers were able to complete separate deals with the Red Sox and Twins to complete the trade.

While the trade was waiting for approval, Pederson lost his arbitration case against the Dodgers. Pederson requested $9 million for the 2020 season, but he will only earn $7.75 million instead. The decision of MLB to go through with Pederson's arbitraton hearing despite the trade being in limbo left the MLB Players Association angry. Union head Tony Clark called it a "perversion of the salary arbitration process." Despite being a few cities away from each other, the Dodgers and Angels haven't made any player for player trades since 2014, and they've only made 9 in their history.

The trade being called off leaves the Dodgers with a sudden overflow in the outfield picture for 2020. Pederson, new acquisition Betts, Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor, AJ Pollock, Matt Beaty, and Enrique Hernandez have all played outfield at some point in their career, and will all be in the mix for playing time this year with the Dodgers. Stripling will likely replace RHP Kenta Maeda in the starting rotation, who was traded to the Twins in the reworked Betts trade. The Angels will also now have to look for a starter to fill the rotation spot that Stripling would've filled, in addition to keeping Rengifo.
