The Cleveland Indians have shut down RHP Emmanuel Clase, according to Mandy Bell of mlb.com. Clase will miss 8-12 weeks of action with a strained upper back. Clase was the main piece in Cleveland's return for Corey Kluber, who they traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Clase and OF Delino DeShields. Clase underwent an MRI that confirmed the injury.

Indians manager Terry Francona was a little surprised after, saying that "You know what? We’re actually kind of surprised that it was that length because he wasn’t complaining about it very much at all, obviously he must be a pretty tough kid. Now, the rehab and the way he progresses goes completely on how he’s feeling." Clase himself said that "I’m feeling some pain in my arm, something that I have never felt before, but I’m still working hard to get better and staying positive, it feels a little better each day, but I felt discomfort again yesterday. I don’t want to force it."

The young hurler made 21 appearances at the major league level for the Rangers last season. He struck out 21 hitters and posted a 2.31 ERA in 23 1/3 innings pitched. Clase also played in the dominican winter league, finishing that season off with a 1.29 ERA with 6 strikeouts. Clase was a favorite to win a roster spot in spring training, showcasing his 100 mph cutters in bullpen sessions. He was slated to play in his first spring training game on Monday against the Colorado Rockies.
