The Boston Red Sox have signed C Jonathan Lucroy, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The deal is a minor league contract that includes an invite to major league spring training. Lucroy has passed his physical and is with the Red Sox in Fort Myers, FL. Lucroy underwent neck surgery this offseason but is feeling 100% better, and will be ready for the start of the season.

Lucroy had a below average 2019, hitting .232 with 8 homers and 36 RBI in 101 games played. Lucroy spent 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs, serving as a backup catcher. 74 of his games and 7 of his homers were in an Angels uniform, along with 30 RBI. 1 homer, 6 RBI, and 27 games were spent with the Cubs. In his career, Lucroy is a .274 hitter with 108 homers and 545 RBI across 1,202 games played over 10 major league seasons. Lucroy has suited up for the Angels, Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers in his career, earning an all star game appearance in 2016, in which he spent time with the Brewers and Rangers.

Lucroy has experience with Red Sox interim manager Ron Roenicke, as Roenicke managed Lucroy during his time in Milwaukee with the Brewers. Lucroy will compete for the backup catcher spot with Kevin Plawecki in spring training. Christian Vazquez is the incumbent starting catcher, and is coming off a breakout 2019 season. Lucroy is a good defensive catcher with just an average bat, much like Plawecki and Vazquez's backup the last few seasons, Sandy Leon.
