Red Sox set to name Roenicke manager

The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a deal to name Bench Coach Ron Roenicke the new manager, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. Roenicke would become the team's 48th manager. The team reportedly won't make it official until the results of the investigation into the 2018 Red Sox are released. The results will reportedly be released before pitchers and catchers start to report to Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, FL, on Monday. The Red Sox released a statement that reads "Our managerial search is not yet completed, we will comment at the completion of the search."

Roenicke has previous managerial experience at the major league level, managing the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011 to 2015, leading them all the way to the NLCS in 2011, the only year they made the playoffs. Roenicke led the team to a 342-331 record in the regular season in his 5 years as manager. After he was fired by the Brewers, Roenicke was the 3rd base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels. He became the bench coach of the Red Sox in 2018 when Alex Cora was hired as manager.

The Red Sox have been looking for a new manager for about a month now, after Cora was fired as a result of the sign stealing punishments against the Houston Astros. Cora’s punishment is expected to be severe when the Red Sox investigation is finished, although the Red Sox as an organization could get off easy. I think this because if they can hire a member of the 2018 staff that is under investigation as their manager in 2020, the punishments could end up being light compared to Houston’s.
