San Francisco Giants RHP Tyler Beede will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Beede will miss all of the 2020 season and be sidelined for 12-18 months. Dr.Keith Meiser will perform the surgery in Texas. Beede departed his second start of spring training with tightness in his right elbow. An MRI revealed a sprained UCL and flexor tendon, and Beede decided to have the surgery.

Zaidi said in a conference call with reporters that "As Tyler consulted with multiple doctors on this, in-person visits and also providing his scans, that was kind of the increasing consensus of the group of doctors that we were consulting, that surgery was advisable, rehab continues to be an option, but for somebody at his age, the feeling was even if he was able to rehab successfully, it might only be a matter of time before he starts having symptoms again." Zaidi also said that the Coronavirus pause on baseball didn't factor into Beede's decision. "I think that was already Tyler’s strong lean and the organization certainly supported him, I hink it was headed that way, even independent of the layoff we're in right now."

The 2014 first round pick out of Vanderbilt entered camp as a favorite to win the 5th starter spot in the rotation with the Giants. He had hit as high as 98 mph with his fastball, and appeared ready to taking another step forward in his development before the tightness hit, which led to the surgery. Beede made his major league debut in 2018. Last season, he appeared in 24 games for the Giants, with 22 of them being starts. He posted a 5-10 record with a 5.08 ERA and 113 strikeouts. RHP's Logan Webb and Trevor Cahill now enter as favorites to take over Beede's spot in the rotation.
