Munoz to have Tommy John

San Diego Padres RHP Andres Munoz will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to GM AJ Preller. Munoz will miss all of 2020 and some of 2021. Munoz sustained damage to his UCL during spring training. He underwent an MRI and opted for a second opinion before deciding to have the surgery. Munoz only made one appearance during spring training, a scoreless inning against the Seattle Mariners on March 5. He reportedly developed soreness a few days later, leading to the MRI.

Munoz, a promising righty in the Padres bullpen, made his major league debut in 2019. He went 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA with one save and 30 strikeouts in 22 appearances. He threw 30 innings over that time. Munoz's fastball routinely touches 100 mph, and he was a favorite to be an opening day member of the Padres bullpen. San Diego's bullpen remains solid without Munoz in the picture, as it still includes Kirby Yates, Drew Pomeranz, Craig Stammen, Emilio Pagan, Jose Castillo, and Matt Strahm.

Preller said in a statement that "Obviously, everything's up in the air right now, we know we have some bullpen depth. But in general, with pitching, you know you need as many arms as possible, because injuries are unfortunately a part of it. He had a chance to make our club, be a big part of our bullpen. But for him, now, it's get ready for next year."

Preller also announced that the team's number 16 prospect, Reggie Lawson, will also undergo Tommy John surgery and will also miss all of 2020.
