Red Sox add Munoz

Before the roster freeze took effect across baseball, the Boston Red Sox signed IF Yairo Munoz to a minor league deal, according to the team. Munoz will join the team as a non roster invitee to spring training, whenever MLB decides to restart the season prep. Munoz signs with the Red Sox 3 weeks after he was cut by the St.Louis Cardinals for leaving their spring training camp unexpectedly and without informing anyone. He flew home to the Dominican Republic and was dealing with a hamstring injury at the time.

Munoz made his major league debut with the Cardinals in 2018. In 2019, Munoz hit .267 with 2 homers and 13 RBI in 88 games played. In his career, Munoz is a .273 hitter with 10 homers and 55 RBI in 196 games played. He also has 13 career stolen bases. Munoz came up as a shortstop, but served as a utility player in St.Louis, playing every position except pitcher and catcher in his time there. If he makes the major league roster, he'll give interim manager Ron Roenicke some much needed versatility on the bench in Boston.

Munoz will enter camp in a battle for one or two bench spots with Tzu-Wei Lin, Marco Hernandez, and Jonathan Arauz, all infielders. The Red Sox have made several minor moves this offseason to build up the depth, bringing in fringe major leaguers like Munoz, Jeffery Springs, Austin Brice, and Josh Osich. The Red Sox also brought in some experienced major leaguers like Kevin Plawecki, Jonathan Lucroy, Martin Perez, Jose Peraza, and Kevin Pillar through free agency.
