The Boston Red Sox have signed RHP Collin McHugh to a one year, $600,000 deal, according to the team. McHugh is guaranteed $600,000, but can make as much as $4.25 million through incentives that trigger based on innings pitched. McHugh is coming off a right elbow injury and may miss the start of the season. McHugh is capable to be either a starting pitcher or reliever, bringing versatility the Red Sox need. He pitched entirely out of the bullpen in 2019, split time between starting and relieving in 2018, and 2017 was his last full season of starting pitching.

McHugh has reported to Red Sox camp, and is expected to begin a throwing program with the training staff soon. In 2019, McHugh had a 4-5 record with a 4.75 ERA in 35 appearances for the Houston Astros. He struck out 82 hitters over 74 2/3 innings pitched. In his career, McHugh has a 58-43 record with a 3.95 ERA in 210 appearances, 119 of them being starts. He has 771 strikeouts over 800 2/3 innings pitched. McHugh has spent 8 years in the majors, spending time with the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, and Astros.

Red Sox interim manager Ron Roenicke said of McHugh's versatility that "Well, he can do both and he’s willing to do both, so we’ll kind of get him ramped up, extend him out and then see where he fits in on our staff." Roenicke said of McHugh's recovery from his elbow that "They’re evaluating him still now, so we don’t know when that period will be when he starts up, but he’s coming back from a flexor also so we’re not sure when that period is when he’ll be able to pitch in games for us." The Red Sox DFA'd RHP Hector Velazquez to make room for McHugh on the 40 man roster.
