New York Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Syndergaard suffered a torn UCL in his right elbow and will miss all of 2020 and likely most of 2021. Syndergaard began feeling discomfort in his elbow right before spring training was cancelled. After getting a second opinion, it was determined surgery was necessary. Dr. David Altcheck will be doing Syndergaard's surgery on Thursday.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement that "After experiencing discomfort in his elbow before Spring Training was suspended due to the pandemic, Noah and our health and performance department have been in constant contact. Based on the persistence of his symptoms, Noah underwent a physical examination and MRI that revealed the ligament tear. A second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache confirmed the diagnosis and the recommendation for surgery. Noah is an incredibly hard worker and a tremendous talent. While this is unfortunate, we have no doubt that Noah will be able to return to full strength and continue to be an integral part of our Championship pursuits in the future."

Syndergaard, who will become a free agent after the 2021 season, had a solid 2019 with the Mets. He went 10-8 with a 4.28 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 197 2/3 innings pitched. He started 32 games in 2019. In his career, Syndergaard is 47-30 with a 3.31 ERA with 775 strikeouts in 716 innings pitched. He has played in 119 career games, with all but one being starts. Syndergaard will earn $9.7 million this season, and will be in his final season of arbitration eligibility next winter. The Mets starting rotation will now include Jacob Degrom, Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, Rick Porcello, and Michael Wacha.

The Mets have had a history of pitchers with Tommy John surgery. In addition to Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Degrom, Matz, and Zack Wheeler have all had Tommy John in the last 5-7 years. Lots of pitchers have also had the surgery recently across baseball. Red Sox LHP Chris Sale, Padres RHP's Andres Munoz and Reggie Lawson, and Giants RHP Tyler Beede have all had the surgery in the last week. Additionally, New York Yankees RHP Luis Severino had the surgery last month.
