In the wake of Steve Pearce and executive Chaim Bloom expressing their frustration with MLB's investigation into the Boston Red Sox 2018 World Series winning team, Joe Kelly is the latest to express his frustration. Kelly, who was an instrumental part of the 2018 team in the playoffs, doesn't believe MLB has concrete evidence to convict the Red Sox of any wrongdoing. He went as far as saying that the team would have had an easier time winning if they were cheating.

Kelly said on Boston radio station WEEI that "Whenever the investigation is done, I'm interested in seeing what is in the investigation, if there is cheating involved with how good our team was, we should have won every single out. We should have not even lost an inning if there was some good cheating involved, which would have been a lot more fun because we would have won in four. We would have swept through the playoffs and made it really, really fast and been able to go to Hawaii or go to Mexico and go on vacation a lot sooner than we did."

The Red Sox were baseball's best team in 2018, winning 108 games in the regular season. Their dominance continued in the postseason, where they went 11-3 and won the world series in 5 games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The manager of that team, Alex Cora, was fired after he was implicated in the sign stealing scandal of the 2017 Houston Astros, which prompted allegations against the 2018 Red Sox and an investigation by MLB. The investigation is finished, but releasing the results has taken a backseat due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, according to commissioner Rob Manfred.

Kelly continued on, saying that "The whole thing is a debacle to me, now sitting at this point with no baseball being played and no results on an investigation, I just feel like, was I dreaming? Is there actually an investigation? It's like the Boogeyman series, what's the deal with this thing? From the get-go, I just thought it was laugh-out-loud funny." Kelly was dominating in the 2018 postseason, posting a 0.79 ERA, and threw 6 scoreless innings in the world series. Following the win over the Dodgers, Kelly actually signed with them a few months later.
