Offseason report: New York Mets

Heading up north to New York City, the New York Mets offseason is profiled.

2019 recap
The Mets had a bad start to the season, stumbling most of the way. However, after they traded for Marcus Stroman at the trade deadline, they went on a remarkable surge, nearly making the postseason, but ultimately fell short with an 86-76 record.

What you need to know
As a result of the surge, the Mets wanted to bolster the team depth this winter. They started the offseason with a trade for Houston Astros CF Jake Marisnick to slot in behind Michael Conforto. They brought back a bullpen piece in Brad Brach a day later. During the winter meetings, the Mets went for some starting rotation depth, picking up Rick Porcello from Boston and Michael Wacha from St.Louis. Then they signed a dominant bullpen arm in Dellin Betances to pair with incumbent closer Edwin Diaz. Then they brought in infield depth in Eduardo Nunez and Matt Adams on minors deals to wrap up the offseason.

Moves I like
Marisnick is a good 4th outfielder for the Mets, as he can play the entire outfield. Brach is good when he's healthy, same as Betances, but keeping them healthy will be key. Porcello and Wacha are coming off down years, so they'll use their Mets tenure to try and boost their value again. Nunez can play all over the diamond, which brings some valuable versatility to town, and Adams can still crush a baseball every now and then.

2020 outlook
The Mets spent all winter boosting depth, and it's about to be tested since Noah Syndergaard needs Tommy John surgery. The depth should keep the Mets from falling apart this time around. They'll finish around the same record they had last year, improving by a few wins in my mind. This time around, the playoffs should be in store for the Mets.
