Pirates' Santana handed 80 game suspension

Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Edgar Santana has been suspended 80 games for a positive PED test, according to an announcement from MLB. He tested positive for the PED Boldenone a few days ago, and the suspension was then announced.

Pirates GM Ben Cherington said in a statement that "The Pirates are disappointed to learn of today's news that Edgar Santana has received an 80-game suspension as a result of a violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, because of the confidentiality requirements of the program, we will not have further comment on this matter."

Since the suspension is for 80 games, Santana will not be able to play at all over the course of the 2020 season. It's unclear if the other 20 games he would need to serve would carry over into the first 20 games of the 2021 season. That seems unlikely, however, as MLB is allowing Cleveland Indians reliever Emmanuel Clase to serve his 80 game ban for the 60 games that will be played in 2020.

Santana made his major league debut in 2018 with the Pirates. He emerged as a solid relief option for the Pirates, posting a 3-4 record with a 3.31 ERA over 88 relief appearances, striking out 74 batters over 84 1/3 innings pitched. He didn't pitch for the Pirates during the 2019 season, as he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. He seemed ready to replicate his 2018 success in 2020, as he threw 5 scoreless innings in spring training before the season was halted.
