Baseball may only be playing 60 games this season, but opening day isn't going to disappoint. On July 23, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will be making his Yankees debut against Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals in Washington, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The game will take place at Nationals park, with arguably the two best pitchers in baseball going at it.

The MLBPA recently signed off on the 60 game schedule proposed by MLB, which features 60 games over 66 days. Despite the approval, the schedule has not been released to the public. Some players are still expressing concern over starting the season due to recent spikes of COVID-19 in the southern states, most notably Florida, Texas, and Arizona.

Cole signed a 9 year, $324 million deal with the Yankees in the deal of the winter, becoming the richest pitcher in baseball history to become the new ace in New York. He signed with the Yankees after two dominant seasons in Houston, where he went 35-10 with a 2.68 ERA and 602 strikeouts in  412 2/3 innings pitched.

Scherzer missed time in 2019 due to back issues, but still posted a 11-7 record with a 2.92 ERA in 27 starts. Scherzer is also a 3 time Cy Young winner. The last time Scherzer and Cole squared off was in game one of the 2019 World Series, where the Nationals came out on top. They would have matched up again in game 5, but Scherzer was scratched due to back pain.
