It didn't take long to see MLB's first game with a runner on second to start extra innings. Frankie Montas threw 4 innings, Matt Olson hit a walkoff grand slam, and the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 in 10 innings. In the top of the 10th, it was Olson who kept the game tied by gunning down Shohei Ohtani, and it was Olson who ended the game.

The Angels started the scoring in the 4th inning with a Brian Goodwin single to right that brought in Albert Pujols. The A's quickly tied it in the bottom of the 4th with a Ramon Laureano solo homer to left. It stayed that way until the 7th, when Andrelton Simmons scored on a David Fletcher sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 Angels. In the 8th, Laureano hit an RBI double and then scored on a Matt Chapman Triple to make it 3-2 Oakland. In the 9th, Jason Castro delivered a solo homer for the Angels to tie the game at 3. That set the stage for Olson, who sent the first pitch he got way into the stands for a grand slam.

Burch Smith got the win for the A's, pitching a scoreless 10th inning with one hit and one walk. Starter Frankie Montas threw 4 innings, giving up one run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 5 hitters. Liam Hendriks pitched the 9th for Oakland, but blew the save when he gave up the homer to Castro.

Hansel Robles took the loss for the Angels, as he allowed all the runners that scored on Olson's grand slam on base while he was pitching. Starter Andrew Heaney went 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on just two hits, striking out 6. Heaney said of the opening day loss that ''We're basically playing one-third of a season so that's like losing a three-game series. That's what it feels like."

Game two of the series starts at 4:10 PM Eastern, with Sean Manaea starting for Oakland. The Angels counter with new acquisition Dylan Bundy.
