Padres cut Dozier

The San Diego Padres have released 2B Brian Dozier, according to an announcement made by the team on Saturday. Dozier was invited to Padres spring training in February after agreeing to a minor league deal, but when the Padres submitted their player pool, Dozier wasn't included in it, which led to his release.

In 2019, Dozier hit .238 with 20 homers and 50 RBI in 135 games played for the eventual world series champion Washington Nationals. Despite that statline, Dozier was rarely used during the postseason. In his 8 year MLB career, Dozier is a .245 hitter with 192 homers and 561 RBI, suiting up for the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Nationals in the process. 2019 was Dozier's 6th straight season of at least 20 homers.

The Padres are expected to add to their player pool soon, but Dozier won't be in it. The odds were already against Dozier from the get go, as Jurickson Profar and Greg Garcia entered camp as the favorites to get the bulk of the second base reps, and the trade that brought A's prospect Jorge Mateo to San Diego might have sealed Dozier's fate. Dozier won the AL Gold Glove in 2017, and appeared in the 2015 all star game.
