The Kansas City Royals have acquired OF Franchy Cordero and RHP Ronald Bolanos from the San Diego Padres in exchange for LHP Tim Hill, according to both teams. This has been the first major trade since MLB lifted the transaction freeze at the end of June.

Royals GM Jeffery Flanagan said that "We're very encouraged with Seuly Matias and Khalil Lee and Kyle Isbel, but to add a guy like Cordero for our future, it made a lot sense." Padres GM AJ Preller said that "I'm not saying it was easy to move Franchy, but we have some other options and some guys playing well for us right now in these scrimmages. We factored everything in, and it was mainly about getting another quality reliever."

In 2019, Cordero hit .333 with no homers and one RBI with one stolen base in just 9 games played. In his career, Cordero is a .240 hitter with 10 homers and 29 RBI with 7 stolen bases in 79 career games played. Cordero has been a major leaguer for 3 seasons, all with the Padres. Bolanos went 0-2 in 2019 with a 5.95 ERA in 5 appearances, 3 of which were starts. Bolanos struck out 19 batters in 19 2/3 innings pitched. 2019 was Bolanos' first professional year.

Last season, Hill went 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in 46 appearances, striking out 39 batters in 39 2/3 innings pitched. Hill also had one save. In his career, Hill has a 3-4 record with a 4.11 ERA in 116 appearances, striking out 81 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings pitched. He debuted in 2018, and has spent both his seasons with the Royals.
