Taylor powers Nats past Jays

In a game played at Nationals Park, the Nationals were... the away team? Due to the Blue Jays still working on getting Sahlen Field in Buffalo upgraded to fit MLB specifications, the Blue Jays served as the home team in Washington. Turns out that didn't matter. Michael A Taylor homered, Kurt Suzuki had two RBI, and the Washington Nationals bested the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4.

The Blue Jays got on the board first, with a Lourdes Gurriel Jr single to left field, scoring Bo Bichette and making it 1-0. In the 3rd, Suzuki hit a two run double to center field, making it 2-1 Nats. In the 4th, Taylor hit a two run homer to center field, making it 4-1. That didn't last long, as Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 4th to make it 4-2. In the 5th, the Nats got the run right back on an Asdrubal Cabrera RBI double. In the 7th, Cavan Biggio made it a 5-3 game with a solo homer to right field. In the 8th, Carter Kieboom scored on a sac fly and Hernandez homered again, making it 6-4 Nats, which held.

Ryne Harper got the win for Washington, pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief. Harper gave up just one hit, no runs, and struck out one hitter. Starter Erick Fedde went 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on 6 hits and two walks, striking out no one. Daniel Hudson pitched the 9th inning for the save. Sam Freeman, Javy Guerra, and Tanner Rainey also pitched for Washington.

Hyun-Jin Ryu got tagged with the loss for the Blue Jays, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and one walk over 4 1/3 innings, striking out 5 hitters. Ryu said after the game that ''I tried to replicate what I'd done in the past against the team, but it just didn't work out like I wanted.'' For reference, Ryu had a 1.37 ERA against Washington last season.

These teams won't be playing for quite a bit. Due to almost 20 players in the Miami Marlins organization testing positive for COVID-19, the Marlins won't be playing any games until at least the middle of next week, so the Nationals won't play a game until August 4 against the New York Mets at Nationals Park. They will continue to have workouts in the meantime.

The Blue Jays were set to play the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend, but since the Marlins outbreak has resulted in so far two Phillies members testing positive, they won't play the Phillies this weekend. The Blue Jays will remain in Washington for the remainder of the weekend, and will travel to Atlanta to play the Braves on August 4, starting a 3 game series.
