Jake Arrieta finally looked like his normal self, and the Phillies needed it. Arrieta threw 6 scoreless innings, Jay Bruce homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies shut out the Atlanta Braves 5-0. Although no fans are allowed inside the ballpark, Arrieta did hear the cheers and sound effects of the contingent of Phillies fans outside the ballpark, where they are every home game.

The Phillies got the scoring going in the 4th inning, when JT Realmuto launched a solo homer into the left field seats for a 1-0 Phillies lead. Later that inning, Bruce cranked a 3 run bomb to center field, making it 4-0 after 4 innings. It would stay that way until the 8th inning, when Didi Gregorius hit an RBI single to right field to make it 5-0 Phillies. That score held through the end of the game.

Arrieta threw 6 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and one walk while striking out 6 hitters. This was Arrieta's first win since June 30, 2019, due to a bone spur in his elbow that required surgery. Arrieta said that ''Everything is coming out of my hand a little more crisp. I have more weapons at my disposal that I didn't necessarily have the last year or two, I'm not worried about the elbow flaring up in the third or fourth inning.''

Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson said of Arrieta's performance postgame that ''I thought he threw the ball well tonight. I thought he didn't get it over the middle of the plate too often, and when he did, he's got so much movement on his ball, it's kind of tough to square him at times."

Kyle Wright started and took the loss for the Braves, throwing 6 innings. Wright allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, striking out 3 hitters. Wright falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while his ERA rises to 6.75, which isn't ideal. Grant Dayton and Chad Sobotka pitched in relief of Wright.

The teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Sunday, in which each game will be 7 innings long due to the new rule MLB institued not too long ago. The Phillies will send Vince Velasquez to the mound in the first game against Huascar Ynoa for the Braves. In the second game, highly touted prospect Spencer Howard will make his major league debut by getting the start for the Phillies, while Max Fried starts for Atlanta.
