Homers lead Padres past Dodgers

The long ball was the big story of this game. Wil Myers homered, Austin Hedges got his first hit of the year, and the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4. Rookie Jake Cronenworth also starred for the Padres, getting a big RBI and making some amazing defensive plays at first base.

It was the Dodgers who got on the board first however, as Joc Pederson took the first pitch of the game out of the park to make it 1-0 Dodgers early. The Padres equaled that in the bottom of the first when Trent Grisham crushed a solo homer to right field to tie the game at 1. It stayed that way until the 4th, when Wil Myers launched a solo homer to right field to give the Padres the lead. The Dodgers took it back in the 5th when Will Smith hit a two run double to make it 3-2. The Padres then tied it right back up thanks to a solo homer from Fernando Tatis Jr. In the 6th, Cronenworth hit an RBI single to left, which Hedges followed up with an RBI single of his own to make it 5-3. Cody Bellinger homered in the 9th to make it 5-4, but that was all the Dodgers could muster.

Cronenworth, after his first experience in the Padres-Dodgers rivalry, said postgame that ''If I didn't know before today there was a rivalry, I definitely do know now. It's fun to play in those type of games. I never played in major league playoff baseball but if I had to guess, that was like it. It was fun. Guys were talking back and forth. It was great.''

Chris Paddack got the win for the Padres, throwing 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and no walks, striking out 5 Dodgers. After allowing the leadoff homer to Bellinger in the 9th, Kirby Yates was able to slam the door on the Dodgers for his first save of the season, striking out the 3 hitters he faced after Bellinger. Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz also pitched for the Padres.

Walker Buehler started and took the loss for the Dodgers, throwing 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 3 Padres. Buehler said of the 3 homers he allowed that it was ''Just three so-so pitches that they took advantage of." Brusdar Graterol, Joe Kelly, Caleb Ferguson, and Dylan Floro also pitched for the Dodgers.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Buehler's performance that ''I thought overall, very positive. We got the pitch count up, got him through five, I just don't think that he had his command that he will have. It's his second start of the year. So, he's going to be fine and I think now we can kind of loosen the reins more his next turn and win a baseball game his next turn.''

The series continues tonight with the second game of what is expected to be quite the series. Dustin May gets the start for the Dodgers as they look to rebound. The Padres look to keep their foot on the gas as they send Dinelson Lamet to the mound for the start.
