Little known Tomas Nido stepped up in a big way for the Mets. Nido homered twice, the offense stayed strong, and the New York Mets powered past the Washington Nationals with an 8-2 win on Thursday. The Mets earned a split of the 4 game series with the win. Nido is the 5th catcher in Mets history to homer twice and have at least 6 RBI in a game, joining legends Gary Carter and Mike Piazza, among others.

The Nationals scored first in the first inning, when Trea Turner scored on a Howie Kendrick ground out to make it 1-0. In the second, Dominic Smith got the Mets on the board with a solo homer to center field. In the 4th, Nido hit his first homer of the day, a two run shot to left field to make it 3-1. In the 5th, Nido launched a grand slam to left field, opening the gates and making it 7-1 Mets. In the 6th, Juan Soto hit a solo homer to center field, and Pete Alonso hit an RBI single in the 8th inning to make it 8-2 Mets.

Rookie David Peterson got the win for the Mets, throwing 5 innings. He allowed just one run on one hit and two walks, striking out 3 hitters. Peterson got some help to get out of the first inning by Jeff McNeil, who made a leaping catch in left field to rob Asdrubal Cabrera of an extra base hit, slamming into the wall in the process. McNeil was carted off, and X-Rays and an MRI on McNeil's left knee were conducted and came back negative. He is day to day with a bruise.

Austin Voth took the loss and started for the Nationals, lasting just 4 innings. Voth allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and two walks, striking out two hitters. Voth only lasted 4 innings due to a high pitch count, which manager Dave Martinez was concerned about. Martinez said postgame that ''Eighty-seven pitches in four innings, that's a lot, we've got to get him through five or six innings.''

Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg was ejected in the 3rd inning for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Carlos Torres. Strasburg apparently shouted something from the stands, leading to the ejection. Strasburg could be seen grinning under his mask as he left, with the Nationals dugout yelling at Torres.

The Nationals travel to Baltimore for the weekend against the Orioles, where Strasburg will start Friday night's game. The Mets travel to Philadelphia to face the Phillies, where Jacob Degrom will start on Friday.
