It's time to start taking the San Diego Padres seriously. Eric Hosmer had a big double, Fernando Tatis Jr made some highlight reel plays at shortstop, and the Padres beat the Houston Astros 5-3. The win increased the Padres win streak to 7 games with the sweep of Houston. This is the longest win streak in 7 years for the Padres, who have long been mired in misery.

The Astros started the scoring in the first inning, when Carlos Correa hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. Kyle Tucker then hit a two run homer to left field to make the lead 3-0 after one inning. It stayed that way until the 4th inning, when the Padres tied the game at 3 thanks to an RBI double from Hosmer, an RBI single by Jake Cronenworth, and an RBI groundout by Jurickson Profar. It stayed tied until the 8th, when Manny Machado hit a clutch two run homer to make it 5-3 Padres, which held.

Tatis turned a lot of heads in the 8th inning, when George Springer hit a pop up that looked like it would drop into left field for a single. Tatis raced into left, lept full force into the air, and came down with the ball, which caught lots of eyes. Tatis said postgame that ''Oh man, it's just great being able to make that play for my pitcher and the rest of the team, too, what can I say, I just saw the ball and I just went after it and my body took care of it.''

Padres manager Jayce Tingler said of Tatis postgame that ''We've got a No. 1 NFL receiver. We've got a point guard in the NBA. We've got a world-class FIFA soccer player, maybe an anchor on a 4x4 Olympic team, we're just blessed that he was born in the Dominican and grew up playing baseball. He's a freak. The other thing, too, is how driven this guy is to not only be a great player, I think driven to be a champion, but more importantly, he wants to bring a World Series to the city of San Diego.''

Craig Stammen got the win for the Padres, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings, finishing the 7th and going the whole 8th inning. Emilio Pagan threw a scoreless 9th inning for his second save of the season, becoming the closer after Kirby Yates was sent to the IL. Starter Adrian Morejon threw 1 2/3 innings for the Padres, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and one walk, striking out 3 hitters. Luis Patino, Cal Quantrill, and Tim Hill also pitched for the Padres.

The Astros, who had an 8 game winning streak prior to this weekend, left San Diego in disappointment after being swept. Manager Dusty Baker knew what the issue was, saying postgame that ''We couldn't keep them in the ballpark, I don't know what the number was but they outhomered us 10-2 or 9-3 and that makes it difficult when you can't keep them in the ballpark.''

Enoli Paredes took the loss for Houston, getting just two outs in the 8th before allowing the two run homer to Machado to put the Padres ahead. Starter Zack Greinke threw 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and two walks, striking out 4 hitters, but he was only able to get the no decision. Brooks Raley and Blake Taylor also made relief appearances for the Astros.

The Astros head back home to face the Los Angeles Angels, where Framber Valdez will start the first game of the series on Monday night. The Padres have a day off on Monday, and welcome the Seattle Mariners to town for a 3 game series starting on Tuesday. Chris Paddack gets the start for Tuesday's game.
