The San Diego Padres have acquired 1B Mitch Moreland from the Boston Red Sox, according to MLB insider Robert Murray. 3rd base prospect Hudson Potts and outfield prospect Jeisson Rosario are heading to Boston in the deal. The Padres confirmed the deal shortly after it broke.

Moreland is hitting .328 with 8 homers and 21 RBI in 22 games for the Red Sox. In his career, spent with the Red Sox and Texas Rangers, Moreland is a .253 hitter with 174 homers and 580 RBI in his 11 year career. Moreland was a member of the 2018 Boston Red Sox, who won the world series, Moreland's only ring. Moreland has a $3 million team option for the 2021 season attached to his contract.

Potts was a first round pick by the Padres in the 2016 draft. Prior to the trade, he was the 16th overall prospect in the Padres system. In 2019, Potts hit .240 with 17 homers and 65 RBI in 111 games played, split between rookie ball and Double A Amarillo.

Rosario was the Padres 19th overall prospect prior to the trade. In 2019, he spent the year with High A Lake Elsinore, where he hit .242 with 3 homers and 35 RBI in 120 games played. In his minor league career, Rosario is a .264 hitter with 7 homers and 93 RBI in 289 games across 3 minor league seasons.

This is the second trade the Red Sox have made in a week, shipping off Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Phillies on August 21. This is the second trade Padres GM AJ Preller has made in as many days, acquiring RHP Trevor Rosenthal yesterday.
