A major trade has just taken place. The San Diego Padres have acquired RHP Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians, according to MLB Insider Robert Murray. The Indians are also trading OF Greg Allen and a player to be named later to the Padres. RHP Cal Quantrill, SS prospect Gabriel Arias, OF Josh Naylor, C Austin Hedges, LHP Joey Cantillo, and IF Owen Miller are heading to the Indians, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Clevinger came into the season as one of the Indians best starters, before he was shut down due to violating COVID-19 guidelines, which started the trade speculation. This season, Clevinger is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA and 22 2/3 innings pitched in 4 starts this season. In his 5 year career, all with the Indians, Clevinger is 42-22 with a 3.20 ERA 101 games, 88 of them being starts.

Allen has been struggling for the Indians as of late, hitting .160 with one homer and 4 RBI in 15 games played. He has a 4 year MLB career, all with the Indians. In that span, Allen is a .239 hitter with 8 homers and 57 RBI in 220 games since debuting in 2016.

Quantrill has spent most of the 2020 season in the Padres bullpen, but did make one start. Quantrill has a 2-0 record with a 2.60 ERA in 10 appearances this season for the Padres. In his two year career, Quantrill is 8-8 with a 4.79 ERA in 33 appearances, 19 of them being starts. Hedges is hitting .158 with 3 homers and 6 RBI in 29 games this season for the Padres. Hedges has always been a defense first catcher who hasn't done too much with the bat, as seen with his .199 career average.

Naylor is hitting .278 with one homer and 4 RBI in 18 games played for the Padres. Like Hedges, Naylor is also more of a defense first player who won't wow you with his bat, but perhaps the Indians could change that. In his two year career, Naylor is a .253 hitter with 9 homers and 36 RBI in 112 games. Cantillo spent 2019 with Single A Fort Wayne and High A Lake Elsinore, where he had a 10-4 record with a 2.26 ERA in 22 games, all starts.

Miller is a middle infielder, having played both shortstop and second base in his professional career. He spent all of 2019 at Double A Amarillo, where he hit .290 with 13 homers and 68 RBI in 130 games played. In his two minor league seasons, Miller is a .307 hitter with 17 homers and 101 RBI in 205 games played across 3 minor league levels. Arias is the top shortstop prospect in the Padres system, having hit .302 with 17 homers and 75 RBI in 120 games with Lake Elsinore. He is a .270 hitter with 23 homers and 147 RBI in 3 minor league seasons.

The Padres have been quite busy over the weekend, making 5 trades with 5 teams, involving 22 players, and two players to be named later. They have acquired Jason Castro, Austin Nola, Mitch Moreland, and Trevor Rosenthal in addition to the trade for Clevinger, Allen, and the player to be named later. The Padres had to part with 8 of their top 30 prospects to get these deals done, with two of them being in their top 10.
