The Philadelphia Phillies have traded for RHP Brandon Workman and RHP Heath Hembree from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for RHP Nick Pivetta and RHP Connor Seabold, according to the Red Sox. The Red Sox are also sending approximately $815,000 in cash considerations to the Phillies as part of the deal. The Phillies will also get a choice of a player to be named later or additional cash considerations.

The Phillies have a league worst 8.07 ERA among their relievers, and the acquisition of Workman and Hembree is clearly a win now move, as Workman hits free agency after this season, and Hembree hits free agency after the 2021 season. The Phillies also traded for veteran reliever David Hale from the New York Yankees prior to this trade.

Workman has been serving as the Red Sox closer since June 2019. In 2020, he has a 0-0 record with a 4.05 ERA in 7 appearances, with 4 saves this season. In his 6 year major league career, Workman has a 24-16 record with a 3.75 ERA across 195 appearances, 18 of those being starts. Workman has 20 career saves, spread across 2020 and 2019. Workman has two world series rings, from 2013 and 2018. He was one of the lone holdovers from the 2013 team, with Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia, who is currently on the 60 day IL, being the others.

Hembree was one of Boston's more reliable relievers prior to the trade. This season, Hembree is 2-0 with a 5.59 ERA in 11 appearances, throwing 9 2/3 innings and striking out 10 hitters. In Hembree's 8 year career, he is 15-5 with a 3.60 ERA over 260 appearances, all in relief. Hembree also has thrown 265 1/3 innings over that time. Most of Hembree's career has been spent with the Red Sox, but did spend his rookie season in 2013 with the San Francisco Giants.

Pivetta has been a starter for most of his career, but broke camp in the Phillies bullpen this season. Pivetta has appeared in 3 games this season, with an ERA of 15.88 over 5 2/3 innings pitched, with 4 strikeouts. Over his career, Pivetta has a 19-30 record with a 5.50 ERA over 92 games, 71 of them being starts. 2020 is Pivetta's 4th season in the majors. Red Sox GM Chaim Bloom said that although Pivetta has been a reliever recently, the Red Sox plan to use him as a starting pitcher.

Seabold was the 23rd overall prospect in the Phillies system. He was drafted in 2017 out of Cal State Fullerton as a starting pitcher, and that is what he has been in the minors. In 2019, Seabold had a 4-2 record with a 2.24 ERA across 3 minor league levels, most recently Double A Reading. Seabold's scouting report describes him as more of a control and command pitcher, someone who won't blow you away with velocity. He can locate his pitches well, which leads to a lot of swings and misses.

Seabold and Pivetta will report to the Red Sox alternate training site at McCoy stadium in Pawtucket, RI, with Pivetta possibly being activated before Monday's game, as the Red Sox don't have a starter announced for that game.
