The Tampa Bay Rays are looking like a juggernaut in the American League. Mike Zunino homered, Joey Wendle had two RBI, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 10-5 to sweep the series and take hold of first place in the AL East. The Rays and Yankees have played 7 games this season out of 10 scheduled, and the Rays have won 6 of them.

The Yankees got on the board first, with Luke Voit striking for a first inning homer to make it 1-0. In the 3rd, they made it 2-0 on a Gleyber Torres groundout. In the 5th, Wendle hit a two run double and Mike Brosseau hit a sac fly to make it 3-2 Rays. That didn't last long, as Gio Urshela hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 5th to make it 4-3 Yankees. In the 6th, Manuel Margot hit an RBI single, Wendle hit an RBI single, and Zunino hit a 3 run homer to make it 8-4 Rays. After the Yankees got one back, Yandy Diaz hit a two run homer in the top of the 9th to make it 10-5.

Diego Castillo got the win for the Rays, getting the last two outs in the 5th inning. He did allow one run. John Curtiss opened things up for the Rays, throwing 1 1/3 innings. Trevor Richards, Ryan Thompson, Jalen Beeks, Aaron Slegers, and Aaron Loup also pitched for the Rays in a bullpen game.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said postgame that ''I'm really impressed with the guys, the way they stayed at it and didn't miss a beat, no doubt it was a fun, exciting trip but I think everybody's ready to get home. We've been cooped up in a hotel for 10, 11 days.'' Wendle added to that, saying that ''We were excited, we just won nine out of 10 on the road. We just swept the Yankees in New York. That's fun stuff.''

Adam Ottavino got the loss for the Yankees, getting just two outs in the 6th inning. He was upset postgame, saying that ''They've got our number right now, obviously, so it's unfortunate, we're gonna have to find a way to have a little better outcomes against them. We play them three more times and plenty of season left, so I'm not really worried, but definitely a little frustrating to get thoroughly beaten like that.''

The Yankees have the weekend off due to positive COVID-19 tests in the New York Mets organization, who they were supposed to play this weekend. They will play on Tuesday at the earliest. The Rays head back home to face the Toronto Blue Jays, where Ryan Yarbrough will start the first game.
