Akin dazzles as O's top Yankees

Baltimore Orioles rookie Keegan Akin was seemingly thrown into the fire in his second career start, having to face one of the top offenses in baseball in the New York Yankees. Akin didn't disappoint. In fact, he impressed. Akin went toe to toe with Gerrit Cole, DJ Stewart homered twice, and the Orioles beat the Yankees by a 6-1 score.

The offenses stayed silent until the 6th inning, when Stewart hit a solo homer to right field. Later in that inning, Ryan Mountcastle hit a two run single, and Rio Ruiz hit a two run double to make it 5-0 Orioles. In the 7th, Stewart increased the lead with a solo homer to right, his second of the day, making it 6-0. In the 8th, Clint Frazier hit a solo homer to right field to get the Yankees on the board, making it 6-1, which held for the rest of the game.

Akin threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 8 hitters. Despite that, he didn't get the win, as the Orioles didn't start scoring until he left the game. Dillon Tate picked up the win for Baltimore, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Akin, striking out two hitters. Paul Fry and Cesar Valdez also pitched for the Orioles.

It was a shocking turnaround for the Orioles offense against Cole, who had been dominating them through 5 innings. It was in the 6th that the Orioles exploded, tagging Cole for 5 runs, starting with Stewart's homer. Cole has now allowed 13 homers, which is the most in the majors among qualified pitchers.

Cole threw 6 innings, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and two walks, striking out 10 hitters. Cole took the loss for the Yankees, with his record falling to 4-3 with the loss. Miguel Yajure threw two innings in relief of Cole, allowing the second homer by Stewart in the 7th inning. He allowed two hits and struck out two hitters.

The Yankees will look to bounce back on Sunday, when Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound. Asher Wojciechowski is scheduled to start for the Orioles
