What a return to the Bay Area for Kevin Pillar. Pillar homered against his old team, German Marquez had a strong outing, and the Colorado Rockies topped the San Francisco Giants by a 7-2 score. Pillar spent 2019 with the Giants after being traded at the start of the season from the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had one of his best offensive years.

The Rockies got on the board in the first inning, when Josh Fuentes hit an RBI single to make it 1-0 Rockies. Ryan McMahon followed that up with an RBI single of his own to make it 2-0. In the 3rd, Pillar extended the lead with a solo homer, making it 3-0 Rockies. In the 4th, Sam Hilliard scored on a balk to make it a 4 run lead. In the 5th, Elias Diaz hit a two run single and Garrett Hampson hit an RBI single to make it 7-0 Rockies. In the bottom of the 5th, the Giants got on the board on an RBI single from Donovan Solano to make it 7-1. In the 7th, Alex Dickerson hit a solo homer to make it 7-2 Rockies.

Pillar said of his return to San Francisco that ''It always feels good coming back, playing against a former team and being able to perform, especially after a team has the ability to bring you back but they don't want you back for whatever reason, offensively, it was nice to get things going. Top to bottom of the lineup, we all had good at-bats.''

Marquez threw 6 dominant innings for the Rockies, getting the win and raising his record to 3-6 this season. Marquez allowed one run on 5 hits and one walk, striking out 3 hitters. Manager Bud Black was happy with Marquez's outing, saying after the game that ''I thought the fastball had good velocity to it, he had conviction with the fastball. The little bit of variability with the breaking ball, which for him is uncharacteristic. He did throw some good ones.''

Johnny Cueto started and took the loss for the Giants, throwing 4 1/3 innings, falling to 2-2 this season. Cueto allowed all 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4 hitters. His ERA rose to 5.53 as a result of the loss. Manager Gabe Kapler said after the game of Cueto's performance that ''He didn't have his best stuff and his command was off, against a team like the Rockies, who are kind of free swingers up and down the lineup, if you're missing in the zone, they can punish you for that.''

The series continues on Tuesday, where the Rockies look to stay strong as Kyle Freeland gets the start. San Francisco will counter with Drew Smyly.
