They call him Donnie Barrels for a reason. Donovan Solano homered, the pitching staff performed, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 on Sunday. Solano has had a magnificent season for the Giants, hitting .344 with 3 weeks to go in the regular season. The Giants also picked up their second straight win.
Arizona got the scoring started in the first inning, when Tim Locastro hit a solo homer to center field to make it 1-0. The lead then became two on a sac fly from Josh Rojas that scored Kole Calhoun. It stayed that way until the 3rd inning, when Chadwick Tromp hit a solo homer to left field, getting the Giants on the board and making it a 2-1 ballgame. Solano then put the Giants ahead in the 6th inning with a two run homer to make it 3-2 Giants. In the 7th, Brandon Belt hit a pinch hit solo homer to make it 4-2 Giants, which held for the remainder of the game.
Belt has been a very hot hitter as of late, hitting .419 in his last 19 games. Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson said of Belt's performance that ''He's been amazing, like nothing I've ever seen, he's always a guy you fear, always a guy you fear to either walk or hit a ball hard, and he's just doing it at an unbelievable rate right now.'' Manager Gabe Kapler was pleased with the whole lineup, saying after the game that ''It's nice to know that up and down the lineup right now we have some guys that can do some damage, it's encouraging what we've seen our guys do over the course of the last two or three weeks.''
Caleb Baragar got the win for the Giants, getting one out to end the 6th inning in relief of Johnny Cueto. Cueto threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on 7 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7. Cueto navigated around a rocky first inning to keep Arizona hitters off balance for the rest of the night. Tyler Rogers worked a scoreless 9th inning to earn his 3rd save of the year. Jarlin Garcia and Tony Watson also pitched for the Giants.
D-Backs starter Alex Young took the loss, throwing 5 1/3 innings, his record falling to 1-3 on the season. Young allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, walking no one and striking out 3 hitters. Junior Guerra, Yoan Lopez, and Riley Smith also pitched for Arizona in relief of Young, with Lopez responsible for the other run, the pinch hit homer from Belt.
The series concludes on Monday, where Kevin Gausman starts for the Giants, having won two of his last 3 starts entering the contest. Zac Gallen starts for Arizona as he tries to continue his dominating season, having just a 1.80 ERA. Gallen is also looking to extend his record streak of 23 games of 3 runs allowed or less to start off a career.
