Twins leave injured Donaldson off wild card roster

The Minnesota Twins are playing the Houston Astros in the wild card series. The Twins will be doing so without a big face. The Twins announced their roster for the wild card series, and 3B Josh Donaldson is not on it. He will be on the taxi squad for the Twins, so he can travel with the team, work out with the team, and serve as an injury replacement.

The injury is likely cramping in Donaldson's right calf, which sidelined him for the final two games of the regular season. Donaldson was limited to just 28 games this season for the Twins due to injury, and hit .222 with 6 homers and 11 RBI in action, in the first season of a 4 year, $92 million deal he signed with the Twins back in January.

To take Donaldson's place on the active roster, the Twins added 2nd overall prospect, outfielder Alex Kirilloff. He had spent the shortened season working out with the Twins alternate site team in St.Paul, along with fellow top prospects Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach. Kirilloff hasn't played a single game above Double A in his minors career, so this is a big leap for Kirilloff. If he were to see action in the series, he would become the 3rd player in history to make his major league debut in the playoffs.
