LAD leads series 1-0
On a night the Los Angeles Dodgers offense couldn't get much going, they were able to capitalize on some mistakes. Cody Bellinger hit an RBI single, Max Muncy scored on a wild pitch, and the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 5-1 to take a 1-0 series lead in the NLDS. The Dodgers weren't afraid to take walks, taking 9 of them before the 6th inning.

The Padres got the scoring started in the 4th inning, when Austin Nola hit an RBI single to make it 1-0 Padres. In the 5th, Justin Turner scored on a Jake Cronenworth error to make it a 1-1 tie. In the 6th, Chris Taylor scored on a sac fly, Turner and Bellinger each hit RBI singles, and Muncy scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-1 Dodgers lead, which remained intact for the rest of the game.

Turner described the plate approach by the Dodgers, saying that "We didn't get a lot of hits early, but we took great at-bats and we made those guys work, our offense is at its best when we're walking as many times as we're getting hits." Bellinger said that "We grinded, and it was a good team win."

Dustin May got the win for the Dodgers, working two scoreless innings in relief. May struck out 3 hitters. Walker Buehler got the start for the Dodgers, lasting 4 innings, Buehler allowed one run on two hits and 4 walks, striking out 8 hitters. Blake Treinen and Victor Gonzalez set up Kenley Jansen, who shut the door on the Padres in the 9th inning.

Garrett Richards got the loss for the Padres, getting two outs in his relief appearance, allowing two runs. Mike Clevinger got the start for the Padres, throwing one inning before being lifted due to an arm injury that kept him out of play prior. Pierce Johnson, top prospect Ryan Weathers, Austin Adams, Tim Hill, Matt Strahm, Craig Stammen, and Luis Patino pitched in addition to Clevinger and Richards.

Padres manager Jayce Tingler, who was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, said that "Bottom line, we lost the battle of the strike zone on both sides, we know they're a disciplined team, and they didn't chase. At the same time, we had chances offensively and they made some big pitches to get out of some jams."

The series continues on Wednesday, where Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers, against Zach Davies of the Padres.
