The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that Matt Klentak will no longer serve as the team's GM, in a press release on Saturday. Klentak was hired in 2015, and added several big names through trades and free agency, but the Phillies were never able to gel and make the playoffs, leading to the shake up.

Phillies managing partner John Middleton said that "I have stated publicly that winning is what matters, not just in Philadelphia but in all cities and in all sports, while Matt made many significant contributions to the organization, we did not accomplish our goal of playing baseball in October. Consequently, we have mutually agreed to allow new leadership to head baseball operations."

Middleton said later that Klentak will remain in the organization, instead serving in a different position. President of Baseball operations Andy McPhail's job is safe, according to Middleton. He also announced that Ned Rice will serve as the interim GM while the team looks for a permanent GM.

Klentak made some big splashes in his tenure as GM, getting big names like Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto to the Phillies in the offseason before the 2019 regular season. He added Zack Wheeler this winter, and made Joe Girardi the new manager. He also brought Jake Arrieta, Didi Gregorius, Andrew McCutchen, and Jean Segura to the Phillies. He drafted top prospect Mickey Moniak first overall in the 2016 draft, and other first rounders in Klentak's tenure, Adam Haseley and Alec Bohm, have made contributions to the Phillies in 2020.
