The Detroit Tigers have named AJ Hinch as their newest manager, according to an announcement from the team. Hinch was suspended for the 2020 season due to his role in the 2017 Houston Astros sign stealing scandal, and was then fired by the Astros.

Hinch said of his season-long suspension that "The last year was the most difficult of my life, it gave me time to reflect, which was such a big part of this process. Everything that has transpired over the past year, personally and professionally, has put so much in perspective for me, and reinforced how important it is to do things with integrity and honesty."

Hinch spent 5 seasons as manager of the Astros, and they had a winning season every year Hinch was at the helm, including 3 straight 100 win seasons. Prior to joining the Astros, Hinch managed the Arizona Diamondbacks for two years. Hinch's managerial record is 570-452 across his 7 seasons managing. Hinch becomes the 39th manager in Tigers history, after Ron Gardenhire retired at the end of the season.

Hinch addressed the team of players he is inheriting, saying that "Having a talented young core of players, dedicated leadership group, and passionate fan base was exactly what I was looking for in a team, and it's clear we have that here in Detroit, it's time to start playing winning baseball, and I am confident this organization is positioned to make that happen."
